Tally alternative? Keep Tally for the books, run the business on your phone

Should you move off Tally? Split running the day from keeping the books, see which job goes where, and plan a two-week switch-over with your CA.

Key facts

  • BizOS is the Tally alternative for running the whole business, not an accounting package. Billing, payment collection, stock, customers, leads, jobs, staff and WhatsApp run on the phone and any browser, while the books stay in Tally with your CA.
  • BizOS works with Tally from day one: alongside first, then instead. It imports your Tally customers, items, godowns and stock once, then keeps Tally in step; you can stop using Tally for daily work later without losing anything.
  • Every bill, receipt, credit note, sales order and branch transfer made in BizOS reaches Tally as a voucher by itself, so nobody types a bill twice and re-sending never duplicates a voucher.
  • The books stay with Tally or your CA: purchase bills with a supplier ledger, journals, bank reconciliation, P&L, balance sheet, TDS, payroll and GSTR-3B. BizOS prepares the GSTR-1 file but files nothing, and does not generate e-invoices or e-way bills.
  • Tally Sync is a BizOS module at ₹2,499 a year (before 18% GST) on the ₹2,999 Billing base, and is part of the Complete bundle at ₹19,999 a year. Every new business gets a 30-day trial.

You probably do not need to move off Tally. You need to move the day off the office PC: billing, collecting, checking stock, following up and giving staff their own access. BizOS does that on the phone and in any browser, and keeps Tally in step so your CA's books stay exactly where they are.

Most owners who search for a Tally alternative are mixing up two different jobs. This post helps you separate them, shows which job goes where, and gives a two-week plan to make the switch without disturbing your CA.

Is it the books, or running the day, that is the problem?

Write down what actually frustrates you. For many owners, the list looks something like this:

  • "I can't see today's sales or who owes me when I'm at a site."
  • "My staff can't bill from their phones, so bills pile up for the evening."
  • "Every bill is typed twice, once for the customer and once for the CA."
  • "Nobody chases payments unless I call."
  • "Enquiries from IndiaMART and Justdial get lost in WhatsApp."

None of these is about the books. They are about running the day: the counter, the van, the site, the customer who hasn't paid, the staff in the field. The books (ledgers, purchases, bank, P&L, returns) are a separate job, and it usually sits with your CA.

Once you see it as two jobs, the question changes from "should I leave Tally?" to "where should each job be done?"

Which job goes where?

When BizOS and Tally are connected, each does the job it is built for:

The job Where it is done How
GST bills at the counter, on the van or at the site BizOS On any phone or browser, sent on WhatsApp with a UPI QR and an optional payment link on your own Razorpay account
Collecting payments and chasing dues BizOS Numbered receipts, automatic WhatsApp reminders, a follow-up list, the staff cash drawer
Enquiries, quotations and sales orders BizOS Leads from IndiaMART, Justdial and Facebook; quotes the customer accepts from a link
Jobs and field staff BizOS A field technician sees only their own jobs on the phone
Stock per godown and branch BizOS Moves as you bill; Tally is told what moved
Who sees what BizOS Six fixed roles decide what each person sees and can change
Purchase bills, journals, bank, P&L, balance sheet, TDS, payroll Tally, with your CA Kept up to date with every bill, receipt and credit note from BizOS
Filing GST returns Your CA BizOS prepares the GSTR-1 file per GSTIN; the upload is your CA's

That is the whole idea: BizOS for running the business, Tally for the books, and nothing typed twice. If the daily side is what you are after, the related posts on payment reminders on WhatsApp and Tally data on your phone go deeper.

How does "alongside first, then instead" work?

BizOS is designed for a business that is on Tally today, and the path never becomes a dead end:

  1. Import once. A small Windows program, the BizOS Agent, is installed on the PC that runs TallyPrime. During setup BizOS reads your ledgers, godowns, voucher types and stock groups; your customers and items follow, and each godown's stock comes in when that godown goes live.
  2. BizOS becomes where the work happens. Bills, receipts, orders and stock moves are made in BizOS, which owns the quantity on hand at each live godown.
  3. Tally is kept in step. Everything made in BizOS is posted into the right Tally company, voucher type, ledgers and godown, so your CA's books stay complete. Nothing is typed twice, and re-sending never duplicates a voucher.
  4. Stop when you are ready. Because BizOS already holds your customers, items, stock and every bill, you can stop using Tally for daily work later without losing anything in BizOS. Tally (or your CA's accounting package) then keeps only the books.

Two details make the move smoother. Bill numbers carry on: a BizOS series can continue from your last Tally number, and each series can name the Tally voucher type its bills go into. Godowns go live one at a time: each opens with Tally's quantity as at the day before, and godowns not live yet stay in Tally and hold nothing up. There is no big-bang weekend.

What does your CA keep doing?

Your CA's work does not change much, and some of it gets easier because bills arrive in Tally on their own.

Stays with your CA (in Tally or their own package) How BizOS helps
Purchase bills, supplier ledger, input tax credit Purchases are pulled from Tally into BizOS stock; BizOS does not keep purchase bills
Journals, general ledger, bank reconciliation BizOS sends sales, receipts and credit notes as vouchers
P&L, balance sheet, trial balance Tally. BizOS reports cover sales, dues, collections, stock and expenses, which is not a P&L
TDS and payroll Tally or your CA
GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing BizOS prepares the GSTR-1 file per GSTIN; your CA files
E-invoice and e-way bill The government portals or Tally; BizOS generates neither

Give your CA the Accountant role in BizOS. They see sales, payments and reports, can work the Tally review queue and take exports, but cannot create, edit or cancel sales documents. One thing to agree early: once Tally setup is complete, issued bills and payments in BizOS are locked, and corrections go through a credit note.

What does a two-week switch-over look like?

Here is a plan for a typical shop or service business with one Tally company. Adjust the days to your own week.

When What to do Who
Day 1 Sign up for BizOS (30-day trial, no card). Add your logo, GSTIN and bill format Owner
Day 1–2 Agree the sync-from date with your CA (default 1 April of this financial year; it cannot be changed from a screen later) and take a backup of the Tally company Owner + CA
Day 2 Install the BizOS Agent on the Tally PC, switch on Tally's gateway (port 9000), pair it with the 6-character code Owner or Admin
Day 3 Map ledgers, godowns and voucher types in the wizard; choose what syncs; continue your bill number series. Press Complete setup Owner + CA
Day 4 Import opening dues from Excel, so bills from before the sync-from date are chased too (Moving from Excel) Owner or office staff
Day 4–5 Raise one test bill in BizOS and find it in Tally: same date, party, amount and GST split Owner + CA
Day 5–7 Invite staff with their roles, install the app on their phones, start billing and sending bills on WhatsApp Everyone
Week 2 Check the WhatsApp payment reminder schedule; take your first godown live; tell staff who still bill in Tally which voucher types BizOS now owns Owner
Day 14 Sit with your CA: clear the review queue (link look-alike customers, don't create twins), check stock differences, decide what moves next Owner + CA

The setup guide says connecting usually takes under an hour, most of it on mapping with your CA. If you are coming from paper or spreadsheets as well, see From notebook and Excel to a business app.

What does it cost?

Tally Sync is a module of ₹2,499 a year (₹4,998 for three years) on top of the ₹2,999 Billing base, and it is included in the Complete bundle at ₹19,999 a year. Office users are ₹999 a year and field staff ₹499 a year. All prices are before 18% GST, and Plan & billing in the app shows the prices that apply to you. If your CA prefers a file to a live connection, the same module gives a Tally XML or Zoho Books export instead.

When is BizOS the wrong choice?

BizOS fits a shop, distributor, service business or contractor in India that needs to bill, collect, track stock, manage staff and follow up, with the books staying in Tally.

BizOS is the wrong choice if you are:

  • A CA firm keeping books for many clients. BizOS runs one business's day.
  • A manufacturer needing bills of material or production entries.
  • A business that only needs its books kept, with no daily selling, stock or staff to run.
  • An exporter, an SEZ supplier or a business that must e-invoice. Those documents are not in BizOS.
  • Outside India. BizOS is built for rupees, IST, Indian GST and +91 numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop using Tally if I start using BizOS?

Not at the start. BizOS is designed to run alongside Tally first: it imports your masters and stock once and sends every bill, receipt and credit note into Tally, so your CA keeps working there. Because BizOS already holds your customers, items, stock and bills, you can stop using Tally for daily work later without losing anything. Agree with your CA first how purchases, ledgers, P&L and return filing will be handled, because BizOS does not do those.

What is a good Tally alternative with a mobile app?

If what you need is to run the day from the phone, BizOS is built for it: GST bills sent on WhatsApp with a UPI QR, automatic payment reminders, stock per godown, leads, quotations, jobs and staff roles, on Android, iPhone and any browser. It connects to TallyPrime so your CA keeps the books in Tally. If you only need accounting, stay with an accounting package.

Will my bill numbers restart if I move billing from Tally to BizOS?

No. BizOS can continue a series from your last Tally number, and each BizOS series can name the Tally voucher type its bills are pushed into, so the numbering carries on.

What does my CA still do if we bill in BizOS?

Your CA keeps the books in Tally: purchase bills, journals, bank reconciliation, P&L, balance sheet, TDS, payroll and filing GST returns. BizOS keeps Tally fed with every bill, receipt and credit note made in BizOS, and gives the CA the GSTR-1 file per GSTIN. The Accountant role in BizOS lets your CA see sales and money without being able to change sales documents.

Can I edit a bill in BizOS after it has gone to Tally?

No. Once Tally setup is complete, issued invoices and recorded payments cannot be edited or deleted in BizOS, and anything that reached Tally stays locked. Corrections go through a credit note. Drafts are always editable.

Who is BizOS not the right Tally alternative for?

A CA firm keeping books for many clients, a manufacturer that needs bills of material, a business that only needs its books kept, an exporter or a business that must e-invoice, and any business outside India. For them Tally or a full accounting package remains the right tool.
